Mineral feed for sheep - to balance the mineral supply

The mineral supply in sheep is usually not covered by the basic feed. Therefore, an additional dose of appropriate mineral mixtures is essential. The quantities and trace elements contained in the mineral feed assume important regulatory and control functions in the body and contribute to the general health of the animals. This applies not only to stables, but also to the pasture. Green fodder generally offers good quality, but this decreases with the frequency of cutting. Especially with large herds, it is advisable to give mineral feed daily or to offer it freely. If the minerals are only given irregularly, it can happen that the sheep have such a strong desire for them that they can be crushed to death at the feeding troughs.

Certain trace elements such as selenium are essential for sheep. Selenium has positive effects on growth and muscles. It also helps convert certain muscle-damaging substances into harmless substances. The interaction of selenium and vitamin E must also be taken into account. When ewes are deficient, the unborn lambs are more likely to die.
